Coffee in Uganda

Coffee in Uganda has a strong presence shaped by its role as one of the country’s most important agricultural exports and by growing domestic appreciation for locally produced beans. In major hubs such as Kampala and Entebbe, coffee appears through specialty cafés, urban coffee shops, and small roasting businesses that highlight Uganda’s Arabica and Robusta production. In other regions it appears through household consumption and local markets connected to the country’s farming communities. Participation is supported by a large national coffee industry, farmer cooperatives, exporters, and government initiatives that promote coffee production and quality improvement. Compared to other beverages in Uganda, coffee historically functioned more as an export crop than a widely consumed domestic drink, though this pattern has been shifting as café culture expands in cities. Visibility has increased through specialty coffee businesses, tourism, and global recognition of Ugandan beans. With continued development of local roasting, cafés, and coffee tourism, coffee in Uganda is positioned for steady growth both economically and culturally.
